In South Africa and across the globe, today’s youth aren’t waiting for permission to redefine how we live, love, work, or lead. They’re doing it in real-time and with real flair. Let’s discuss the ‘soft life’ movement. What started as a lifestyle flex is now a full-fledged philosophy: Gen Z wants emotional well-being, work-life balance, and financial freedom without romanticising burnout. According to McKinsey & Company, this generation values authenticity, self-expression, and inclusivity above all else. They’re not afraid to unlearn what’s not working and rebuild systems from scratch.
They’re also embracing what older generations often avoided: mental health. In the words of TikTok therapy culture: “Healing is the new hustle.” Young people are normalising therapy, emotional intelligence, and boundaries, turning the ‘stiff upper lip’ into a soft, empowered resilience.
But make no mistake, this isn’t passive. It’s a protest with a playlist. It’s #delulu but deeply intentional. It’s calling out brands for performative activism while expecting actual change. From gender fluidity to climate justice, today’s youth are more aware, more intersectional, and more connected than ever.
At Design@Bay, we’re not just watching, and we’re listening. The youth are teaching us how to design braver, communicate smarter, and co-create campaigns to just “go viral”; they must go deep. So, what are we learning from the youth? That the future is now. And it’s not asking for permission.
